Diagnostic Value of Fasting Serum Bile Acid as a Liver Functing Test

Abstract
To evaluate the clinical usefulness of fasting serum bile acid as a liver function test, bile acid concentration was measured in the 88 patients of liver diseases and 30 normal controls by the colorimetric enzymatic measurement. The results were as follows.
1. In normal controls, fasting serum bile acid concentration was 4.03¡¾3.54 nmol/L.
2. Serum bile acid concentration was significantly increased in the patients of liver disease compared with normal controls(p<0.01) and showed 89% sensitivity in the liver diseases.
3. A marked increase of fasting serum bile acid concentration was noted in the patients of acute viral hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and obstructive liver disease.
4. A significant elevation of serum bile acid concentration was found in the patients of liver cirrhosis compared with that of hepatoma (p<0. 05).
